Kirsty McNeill MP recently braved the elements to take on the Mighty Stride — a challenging 23-mile Kiltwalk — in support of Who Cares? Scotland. Despite the rainy weather, Kirsty, a Scottish Labour MP and Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, pushed through the downpour with determination, raising nearly £2,000 for our vital work.

After crossing the finish line, we caught up with Kirsty to hear about her experience and learn why supporting Care Experienced people is such a personal and important cause to her.

Why did you decide to take part in the Kiltwalk?
“I took part in the Kiltwalk to honour my mum, who was badly failed by the care system but used her experiences to power a lifelong fight for children’s rights. What she taught me is the extraordinary strength of Care Experienced people — as long as they have someone fighting in their corner, something she never had as a wee girl.

Today, I’m lucky to have more Care Experienced people close to me, and I want them to know that we will always be there alongside them — fighting for equality, respect and love, until these are a reality for every single Care Experienced person.”

How do you feel now it’s over?

“Now it’s all over I feel pretty shattered — but I’m already thinking about next year! I’m sure a bit of training would help. I feel really daft not doing more practice beforehand.”

What do you hope the impact of your fundraising will be?
“Who Cares? Scotland is a brilliant organisation, and I know the money we’ve raised will go to good use — because the VIPs, the members, wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The money raised will help us continue to deliver everything from family-style Christmas celebrations for members of all ages, to national campaigns that help Care Experienced people realise their rights to a lifetime of equality, respect and love. Without supporters like Kirsty, and everyone who takes on fundraising events for Who Cares Scotland, we simply wouldn’t be able to deliver our vital work in communities across Scotland.

We are incredibly grateful for Kirsty’s support — and for everyone who is walking with love, for love. You can still contribute Kirsty’s fundraising efforts by donating here.
