You’ve been part of Who Cares? Scotland for a few years now, what has working here meant for you?
I don’t think I have ever had a job where I have been so proud to come into work every day, and it’s not really because of what I get to do, it’s because I get to hear about the amazing work being done by everyone else.
Every day I see the difference Independent Advocacy makes to the lives of people of all ages across Scotland, I see the sense of belonging and connection developing through our member groups, I see the power of our campaigns changing laws, and I see the kindness and generosity shown by our volunteers. It’s a really special place to work.
What excites you most about stepping into the CEO role permanently?
What excites me most about becoming Chief Executive permanently is the chance to lead an organisation that has changed so many lives, including mine. Who Cares? Scotland exists to make sure Care Experienced people are heard, respected and treated fairly, and I know firsthand how important that is.
I’m really excited about this, because it means leading work that I’m truly passionate about, ensuring Scotland provides the system and support that every Care Experienced person deserves.
What do you want our members to feel or experience from the organisation over the next few years?
I’m really looking forward to helping shape the future of the organisation with members, making sure that what we do reflects what members tell us they want and need.
I want members to feel that Who Cares? Scotland stands beside them, helps them understand and uphold their rights, and gives them real opportunities to influence the systems and decisions that affect them. I also want them to feel part of a community, connected to other Care Experienced people, able to build relationships, confidence and belonging through their involvement with us.
I am determined to grow and strengthen our membership offer, so that we can provide more opportunities, more benefits and more ways for members all across Scotland to engage in ways that matter to them.
Can you share a moment during your time here that has really stuck with you?
I’ve really struggled with this question, and not because I can’t think of an answer, but because I have had so many moments at Who Cares? Scotland and it genuinely feels awful to pick one over the others.
However, there is one moment which stood out recently, and that is the passing of the Children (Care, Care Experience and Services Planning) (Scotland) Bill. I was travelling at the time but was watching the debate on my phone and when I heard members views quoted in the debate and saw in real time legislation being shaped by lived experience, it meant so much. When the vote took place, and it passed unanimously, I started crying which caused a bit of a stir amongst my fellow passengers! I know the Bill is not the solution to everything, but it is a hugely positive step.
We are so excited to see Kay taking on this role. Her deep understanding of both the experience of care and the challenges facing the community, combined with her professional expertise makes her the ideal person to lead Who Cares? Scotland.
We look forward to continuing to call for change and strive for a lifetime of equality, respect and love for all Care Experienced people.
