I really enjoyed [Parent]ified! I thought the set was very well done and it was amazing. It was so simple as it was just a few props for example a sofa and a rucksack. I found it very inventive to use a mans shirt as I stand in for the boyfriend during the scene when the character was having their first date.
Furthermore, I also feel that the actor portrayed her younger self as a six-year-old child very well and it did not come across as patronising to children it came across as sincere.
The whole production discusses many different topics including poverty, suicidal thoughts and the feeling of just wanting to be loved and wanted as a child. When the person experiences love for the first time from a friend at college they did not know how to react as they have not experienced it from their family as a child, she portrayed the shock of this very well.
It explored the theme of poverty in many different ways. A key example of this is that when she was coming home from work she was really tired and having to be in work in five hours’ time and the pressures of growing up and looking after her younger sister would have been really hard.
The whole production was done by one actor as the story was based on an American girl. The actor played many different parts including her younger self and the boyfriend with a voice over. She played all parts extremely well and the whole production was moving.
Lastly I also feel it’s important to mention that the actor playing the person the whole story was based on was Scottish and she performed a very good American accent and she did not divulge the information that she wasn’t American until the last minute which was a very nice surprise.
