Meet Cheyann

Why do you want to be an MSYP?

I’m running for MSYP because I want a better brighter future for Care Experienced Young People in Scotland. I believe that the key to achieving this is us! Who knows the system’s flaws and strengths better than people with lived experience. Growing up in care you meet a lot of people who come and go in life but there is a select few that whose stories really touch your heart, a few that have been let down by a system put in place to protect them. It’s those peoples stories that drive me to want to make a difference, no one should fall through the net. There is a quote I love ‘’I alone cannot change the world but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples”. I may not be able to change the world but you bet if elected I will create tidal waves.

How will you consult with the young people in your area or organisation to ensure that they are represented well and their voices are heard?

The most important members of WCS are actually the people they represent, your voices fuel our actions and I want to hear your voices and will always take the time to listen. I’m very active on social media as I’m sure many of you are and I believe that through using it and Zoom I will have a wider reach to hear from young people all across Scotland even in remote places. I think that taking a more modern approach to social media and using different apps will help us connect with many young people that wouldn’t normally engage with the care community and really give us a bigger platform for young people to be heard and express themselves and connect with us. Let’s modernise the way we do things and bring us into the future.

Why should people vote for you?

If elected there’s things that I will do and things that I won’t. I WILL NOT offer you whimsical empty promises or a list of changes that only I would like to pursue. If elected what I aim to provide you is my time, devotion, and effort. I can’t promise you a quick fix, or bigger budgets, but I can promise you my time to listen to all of your problems, and to do all I can to address those issues. The experience that I bring being Care Experienced is understanding, love and passion to improve things. We need more support for care leavers, young people with disabilities, and are in desperate need for more mental health support. A lot of trauma and damage is being created during time in care but nothing is being done to deal with the trauma, after all should there not be help for the damage it as a service causes? I understand that my role would be to work for you I’m a very strong fierce woman that will fight in your corner and is dedicated to you.

With thanks to Scottish Local Authorities, funding partners and donors who make our work possible.
