I want to be an MYSP because I want to represent Care Experienced young people across Scotland to promote a fairer and equal society. As a Care Experienced young person myself, I know how difficult it is to leave care and navigate out of it. My journey has been difficult, for example being rejected for aftercare however, trailblazing organisations and individuals in the Care Experience community have fought to introduce many opportunities and new doors for people like me.
Who Cares? Scotland is an organisation looking to promote a lifetime of equality of Care Experienced people of all ages. I will be representing WCS as a MYSP. I am running to stand for issues that act as boundaries to Care Experienced young people and use this opportunity as a chance to advocate for change by raising these issues at the Scottish Youth Parliament as well as the 26 corporate parents to ensure these organisations are doing all they can.
How will you consult with the young people in your area or organisation to ensure that they are represented well and their voices are heard?
I will ensure that young people from 12 to 25 are heard by working with my fellow MSYP to conduct monthly online sessions to hear issues from young people directly. I will work closely with the Who Cares? Scotland team to monitor important issues that young people may have brought up in their work. I will ensure I have a running social media page as well an active email which members of WCS can voice their issues directly to myself. I will also work to hear voices of members across Scotland as well as try to hear from members across different age groups as well to represent everyone fairly.
Why should someone vote for you?
Young members from Who Cares? Scotland should vote for me as I want to focus on employment, education, and housing for Care Experienced young people.
For employment, I want more opportunities for Care Experienced young people after they leave school. I want to try and push the corporate bodies as well as use my powers as MYSP for organisations to create graduate jobs, apprenticeships, and internships specifically for young Care Experienced people. This will help Care Experienced young people develop skills to transition into the working world.
I want to focus on education so all Care Experienced young people have opportunities to do the best they can with support from relevant organisations. I want to ensure Care Experienced people are given support throughout school. I want public organisations such as the SQA to focus on Care Experienced young people to ensure they are not left behind when it comes to education.
Finally, I want to focus on housing for Care Experienced young people. Housing remains a big issue for many Care Experienced young people. This is an issue that I feel deeply about as I could not find housing in Edinburgh as I did not have a guarantor (someone who can pay your rent if you cannot). I want to work with SYP to promote easier access to housing for Care Experienced young people.
With thanks to Scottish Local Authorities, funding partners and donors who make our work possible.
