This year the Care Experienced Week 2021 themes are Celebrating Success and Connection.
Established in 2002, National Care Leavers week was an event created to celebrate the Care Experienced community. In 2018, we changed this to Care Experienced Week, acknowledging that Care Experienced people do not leave their experiences behind when they leave formal care. Despite the name change, the main purpose of the event remains the same.
This year, the theme of Celebrating Success is particularly important as it creates an opportunity to understand the barriers faced by Care Experienced people. Society has its own measures of success, and we all subconsciously compare ourselves to each other. For Care Experienced people that might be each other or their non Care Experienced peers. However, Care Experienced Week is about individual feelings of success. Everyone, if given the right opportunities and support at the right time has the opportunity to feel succesful in their own right. This Care Experienced Week is an opportunity to reflect on what success means for each and every Care Experienced person across the world.
Celebrate your successes on social media!
During Care Experienced week, we’re inviting Care Experienced people to share their successes with us through social media. This can and should be anything which makes you feel like a success. Whether it’s being a great parent, overcoming a fear, trying a new hobby or achieving academic awards, everything is worth celebrating, and so are you.
Share something that makes you feel successful on social media
Use the hashtag #CEWins
We’d love to see how everyone is celebrating Care Experienced Week, so no matter who you are or where you are, make sure you also use the hashtag #CEW21 on all your posts.
Due to the ongoing impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, we are still unable to deliver our usual large scale national events, such as the Time to Shine festival and the Love Rally. However, as it is Care Experienced Week, we’ve organised some smaller events, still intended to have a national impact and with input from members from across the country. Our regional teams have also planned a range of local events and some of our partner organisations have got dates in the diary. If you would like to list an event please email email@example.com.
Care to Connect with Who Cares? Scotland Monday 25th October Closed event.
We have invited representatives from all main political parties to a Care to Connect session, which will be led by members from our National Representative Body. Party representatives will participate in 3 or 4 round robin sessions with questions on themes influenced by this year’s Annual Participation Programme, advocacy issues and our Communities that Care model.

Currently fully subscribed, the Who Cares? Scotland Training & Education team will be delivering this training session during Care Experienced Week, that will look to share some of the insights gained from our Care Experienced members about their mental health and how Corporate Parents can better support them.

The Promise Design School Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th October, 6pm-8pm, Online.
Saturday 30th October 10am-4pm, Who Cares? Scotland Glasgow Office.
The Design School has been set up by the Promise to ensure that any redesign of services or the care system, involves Care Experienced people from the beginning. It has a few training opportunities that aim to upskill Care Experienced people with service design skills. This will be an initial introductory training opportunity, shaped around tutorials and self-directed learning tasks. Those who complete the introductory training sessions will be asked whether they wish to become ‘Design Champions’. The Promise will then support you to get involved with re-design that you are interested in.
Find out more about the design school on its website. If you would like to be involved, email Laura at firstname.lastname@example.org
