DO YOU WANT TO…CARRY ON WITH YOUR EDUCATION?…VISIT
THE UNITED STATES?…REACH HIGHER AND ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
WE’LL HELP YOU APPLY FOR SUMMER SCHOOL IN THE USA
We’re really keen to support young people to be successful.
We decided to start up different activities which are all
about Reaching Higher – to encourage and support young
people to achieve. Our trek to Nepal was one way of doing
this. Here’s another. Who Cares? Scotland is sponsoring a
minimum of three young people to go to Harvard University
Summer School for seven weeks next summer. Harvard is in
Cambridge, Massachusetts in the USA. The summer school runs
from 19 June to 6 August.
Interested? Are you:
• Currently living in care or been in care here and are
still living in Scotland?
• At secondary school?
• 16 years old or more and completed S4 at least?
• Thinking about staying in education and aiming for college
or university?
• Interested in getting a wee taste of college life and
academic study first?
Here’s what to do:
• Contact your Young Persons’ Worker quickly to get more
information.
• Make an application to Who Cares? Scotland – no later than
midday on 15 January 2010 – you can send it by post or
email.
• Tell us in writing why you should be considered – in up to
500 words.
• Your Young Persons’ Worker can support you with your
application but cannot write your statement – this must be
your own work.
If you decide to apply and we agree to go ahead, this is
what happens:
• With your consent, your YPW contacts your school and
social worker to get their support for your application. You
will need a positive school report – from a subject teacher
and your guidance teacher – to send to Harvard. And
agreement about your being ready to travel abroad and spend
seven weeks in a strange environment.
• Your YPW, after discussing everything with you, also needs
to support your application, agreeing you are ready to
handle the experience.
• You fill out an application to Who Cares? Scotland – your
500 word statement.
• You are invited to come for an interview at Who Cares?
Scotland.
• You complete the Harvard University application form and
ask your school for the two reports – as above.
• Our three chosen candidates are put forward to Harvard
University – it makes the final decision about who is given
a place at the summer school – we can’t guarantee
acceptance.
If you are successful, Who Cares? Scotland will offer
financial support to help fund your expenses – school fees,
travel, accommodation and other living expenses, plus some
pocket money. We’ll also give you practical help and support
– including applying to your local authority (and maybe
elsewhere) for financial help.
We can also give you information about summer schools here
in the UK.
Go on – give it a go! Here’s how another young person
described it: All in all, I’d say that I had the time of my
life this summer. We really want more young people to have
that experience. We look forward to hearing from you. Just
remember – get your form to us by midday on 15 January at
the very latest.
