Scott was given a choice of recipes but
decided to use his own chicken curry recipe and method of
cooking it. Scott won the Ready Steady Cook competition at
school with this recipe and has been chef of the week 6
times.
Serves 4
Preparation & cooking time: 1 hour
Award winning chicken curry cooked by Scott aged 13
Ingredients:
Cooking oil
A jar of curry paste
Mixed herbs
Tin of chopped tomatoes
Red pepper
2 onions
2 chicken breasts
Basmati rice
Tub of 5 spices (optional if you would like the
curry hotter)
Total price was £7.10 but this was because
all ingredients had to be bought from scratch. The next time
this was made it would only cost £3.72 for the chicken,
onions, tomatoes and red pepper as there were leftovers from
all other ingredients.
Cut the chicken into slices.
Microwave chicken for 3.5mins (based
on 700 watt microwave).
Wash knife and chopping board.
Chop the red pepper into small cubes.
Put peppers and chicken in a pot with
some oil on a low heat and simmer.
Put about 250g of basmati rice into a
large pot with boiling water. Allow to boil then cook
for approx 12 mins (gas mark 3) Add a pinch of salt.
Chop the onion then fry in a pan with
some oil until soft. Scotts top tip:If you run the knife
under cold water it stops your eyes from watering when
chopping the onion.
Add tomatoes and cooked onion to the
chicken and peppers. Also add 3/4 teaspoon of mixed
herbs and the same of 5 spices if you are using this.
Put 1/2 the jar of sauce in frying
pan and heat.
When sauce is heated then drain rice.
Put the rice into 4 bowls/plates
Add the chicken etc onto the rice.
Share the sauce equally between the 4
bowls. (this is Scotts method you could also add the
sauce at stage 8 into the chicken etc and heat).
Taste Testers
Margaret - I think it needs more salt in the rice. However
the ingredients compliment each other, the presentation is
fantastic which makes it look appetizing.
Liz - This is absolutely fantastic
Elizabeth - My mouth was watering before I even tasted it.
You could smell the cooking all round the building.
Kirsten - The veggie option of rice & sauce is great. The
sauce is lovely.
Thanks Scott for considering the veggie person. (Scott did a
vegetarian option for Kirsten with just the rice and curry
sauce).
